204k asylum applications filed in Germany in first half of 2023

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, 204,000 asylum applications were filed in Germany in the first half of this year. Some European countries are looking to outsource asylum applications to third countries in a bid to cope with migration pressures. Italy meanwhile reached an agreement with Albania earlier this month to transfer migrants rescued at sea while they wait for their asylum applications to be processed.

Extreme heatwave hits Gauteng this week – SAWS

Residents in Gauteng are being cautioned about an extreme heatwave which will affect parts of Johannesburg this week, and clear by Friday. Emergency officials say that the exposure to the extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke. Residents in that province are being advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm and to drink plenty of fluids.
