Having made a name for himself with Malian outfit Djoliba FC, when Abdoulaye Mariko made his debut for Orlando Pirates over the weekend, it was a moment that will be forever etched into his memory.

Pirates won their MTN8 clash over Polokwane City 2-0 at Orlando Stadium, as Mariko came on as a substitute in the final 20 minutes.

By all accounts, Mariko produced an impressive showing in his brief time on the field, which has made Pirates fans sit up and take notice of the 22-year-old midfielder.

Mariko rose to prominence as a vital cog of Djoliba, which featured in the group stage of the CAF Champions League last season.

Mariko’s Journey: From Street Games to Professional Football with Orlando Pirates

“Football has always played a big role in my life – from street games to training academies – I’ve always chased this dream,” Mariko told Orlandopiratesfc.com.

“Joining Djoliba was a major step in my career. It’s one of the biggest clubs in Mali, and it helped me grow both technically and mentally. It was at Djoliba that I truly understood what it means to be a professional footballer.”

When he stepped onto the park for the first time as a Buccaneer, it was emotional, Mariko revealed.

“Wearing the Pirates jersey for the first time felt like a dream come true,” he said. “I knew I was representing a club with great history, pride, and passionate supporters – I felt a deep responsibility to give my best.”

Pirates begin their Betway Premiership campaign on Saturday against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is at 5.30pm.
