The question every South African is asking right now is simple: Can Bafana Bafana beat Canada in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash on Sunday?
Depending on who you ask, you’ll probably get a different — and often emotional — answer.
If you ask me, I’d say we have no chance.
Just kidding. I think we can do it.
AI Predictions: Bafana Bafana’s Chances Against Canada in FIFA World Cup Round of 32
But the point of this story is to look for a more clinical, data-driven assessment.
So I turned to AI.
I asked both ChatGPT and Google Gemini the same question:
“What chance does Bafana Bafana have of beating Canada in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match on Sunday?”
The responses were quite different.
ChatGPT estimated Bafana’s chances of winning in normal time at 30%, gave Canada a 50% chance, and assessed a 20% probability that the match would go to extra time and penalties.
Gemini, meanwhile, declined to attach a percentage to the outcome.
Instead, it concluded: “While the bookmakers and rankings might technically label South Africa the underdogs, the reality on the pitch shows that Bafana Bafana have a very realistic, fighting chance of progressing to the Round of 16.”
ChatGPT also pointed to South Africa’s improvement as the tournament has progressed, noting that Bafana looked vulnerable defensively in their 2-0 defeat to Mexico before producing much more disciplined displays against Czechia and, most notably, South Korea.
Gemini also highlighted the confidence Bafana will have gained from their historic victory over South Korea.
It added: “If Bafana can replicate the organised, fearless defensive display they showed against South Korea and catch Canada on the counter-attack, they have every chance of writing another Hollywood script in LA.”
Whichever AI model you prefer, both agree on one thing: Bafana Bafana have more than just a puncher’s chance of making even more World Cup history.
