The late resurgence by Kaizer Chiefs stands as the greatest threat to AmaZulu’s Top 3 finish in the Betway Premiership and their ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup.
Usuthu now find themselves walking a tightening rope at the business end of the season. A difficult trip to face Orlando Pirates in Soweto (kick-off 3pm) on Saturday presents both an opportunity and a looming setback, depending on how they navigate it.
Against a Pirates side with far more urgency and pressure to deliver in the championship race, AmaZulu will need to squeeze every possible point from the encounter, if they are to keep their ambitions alive. On paper, AmaZulu’s position remains strong.
AmaZulu are on 39 points in fourth place, six points behind the Amakhosi. A Top 5 finish looks well within reach, a testament to AmaZulu’s consistency across the campaign but at this stage of the season, it is no longer just about stability but ambition.
The top 3 is where Usuthu would naturally want to finish after being in that discussion for most of the year.
Playing next season in the Confederation Cup would be their reward for a season well played. In doing so, AmaZulu would also take KwaZulu-Natal football up another level. With third-place still within touching distance, Usuthu have every reason to push beyond expectations.
Recent performances, however, tell a slightly mixed story.
In mid-March a 1-0 victory against Polokwane set the belief that a Top 3 finish could be obtained. It was followed by a 2-2 draw against Sekhukhune United, which showcased their attacking quality but also highlighted defensive vulnerabilities. That was followed by a hard-fought draw away to Siwelele, where they showed resilience even after being reduced to 10 men.
It is a run that reflects character, but also inconsistency at a crucial stage.
In contrast, Chiefs are peaking at precisely the right time. Five consecutive wins have injected belief into the Soweto giants, transforming them from fringe contenders into a serious late threat. Confidence is high, performances are flowing, and perhaps most importantly, they still hold a game in hand — a factor that could prove decisive.
This sets up an intriguing contrast because AmaZulu have built their campaign on steady results, grinding out points even when not at their best. Chiefs, meanwhile, have momentum, the kind that can rapidly reshape the table in the final weeks and flip the league on its head.
If Chiefs maintain their winning streak and capitalise on their extra fixture, AmaZulu’s margin for error disappears entirely. The stakes could not be higher as we edge into the final stretch of the league.
