The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Limpopo has expressed shock and sadness at the news of the passing of a member of their Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).

Nkateko Mbhoma was shot and killed in the early hours of Tuesday in Leeudoringstad while travelling to Kimberley for their second national general council.

ANCYL Spokesperson Zama Khanyase said: “The ANCYL condemns in the strongest terms the scourge of violent crime which continues to claim the lives of innocent South Africans. Criminality has no place in our society, and we call on law enforcement agencies to act with urgency to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and face the full might of the law. Justice must prevail.

As the youth league, we remain resolute in our call for safer communities, decisive action against crime, and the protection of young leaders who continue to serve the people of South Africa.”

The ANCYL has condemned this act saying it is meant to scare young people out of radical political participation.

Khanyase said: “This senseless act of violence has robbed the movement of a committed young leader who dedicated their life to the struggle for youth emancipation and the advancement of our people.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, comrades, and the broader Limpopo province structures of the Youth League. We pray for strength and comfort during this painful period.”

North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said police are on scene and will share updates after conducting their investigations.

Sandiso Magaqa was one of the most prolific participants in the ANCYL structures before his assassination in 2017.

South Africa has a high number of politically motivated killings, to an extent that the police established political killings tasks teams in various provinces, with a high focus in KwaZulu Natal.
