The future of South African football looks brighter than it has in years after Bafana Bafana’s historic FIFA World Cup run, and there is every chance a handful of players have caught the attention of clubs across Europe.
Bafana were cruelly knocked out as Canada scored the winner in a 1-0 Round of 32 victory deep into referee’s added time on Sunday, just as South Africans were beginning to prepare themselves for extra time and perhaps even penalties.
Still, Bafana were never expected to get this far.
Personally, I thought they might sneak through to the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed finishers in the expanded 48-team World Cup. Instead, they exceeded expectations by finishing second in their group to qualify automatically.
Ronwen Williams Shines as Bafana’s Young Stars Gain World Cup Exposure
Ronwen Williams was once again one of Bafana’s standout performers. From a South African perspective, that came as no surprise. Anyone who follows local football or watched him at the Africa Cup of Nations already knows the Mamelodi Sundowns captain is a world-class goalkeeper.
Against hosts Mexico in Bafana’s World Cup opener, Williams produced a string of superb saves to prevent what could have been a far heavier defeat after South Africa fell behind early in the 2-0 loss.
He maintained that high standard throughout the tournament and, while the 34-year-old is no longer a youngster, goalkeepers often reach their peak later in their careers. His performances may well have attracted interest from clubs abroad.
But the biggest success story from a player development perspective was the exposure gained by Bafana’s young stars on football’s biggest stage.
Perhaps the player with the highest ceiling is Relebohile Mofokeng. The 21-year-old Orlando Pirates winger did not set the tournament alight, but Hugo Broos’ faith in him spoke volumes. The youngster came off the bench against Czechia before earning starts against both South Korea and Canada.
For a coach as demanding as Broos, that was a huge vote of confidence.
Then there is Mbekezeli Mbokazi. At just 20 years old, he has already established himself as the rock of Bafana’s defence. The powerful centre-back, who currently plays in Major League Soccer (MLS), looked completely at home against world-class opposition. He is also being touted as a future Bafana captain.
If he continues on this trajectory, a move to one of Europe’s top leagues – perhaps even the English Premier League – feels less like a dream and more like a matter of time.
Bafana’s World Cup journey may have ended in heartbreak, but it also gave South African football something it has long craved: genuine belief that a new generation is ready to compete with the world’s best.
