Former Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy has indicated that he would be open to a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, but insists the decision rests with the Soweto giants if they wish to pursue him.

McCarthy previously enjoyed a successful stint with AmaZulu, guiding the KwaZulu-Natal outfit to a second-place finish in the 2020/21 season and securing Caf Champions League qualification — one of the club’s most notable modern achievements.

Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide about speculation linking him to the vacant Amakhosi coaching position, McCarthy did not dismiss the rumours but made it clear Chiefs would need to initiate contact.

“They are a good team with very good players,” McCarthy said.

“But if nobody comes knocking on my door, it means you are happy with what you have. If they want me, they know where I am and how to make it happen. Other than that, it’s just a rumour.”

While the focus remains on Chiefs, McCarthy also weighed in on the national team situation, with Hugo Broos expected to step down as Bafana Bafana coach after the upcoming Fifa World Cup.

He backed Pitso Mosimane as his preferred candidate to take over.

“Coach Pitso has my vote. He deserves another opportunity and is one of the most accomplished coaches to come out of this country. His record speaks for itself,” McCarthy said.

Currently in charge of the Kenya national team, McCarthy admitted he ultimately sees himself returning to club football, despite valuing the international experience.

“The experience in Kenya has been nice, but I think I am still too young to go so long without action.

“I want to improve players and you don’t always have enough time with them at national level. After this experience, I would like to go back to managing clubs.”
