Tactical innovations have continuously reshaped rugby, and the Springboks have navigated uncharted territory with one of their key players, André Esterhuizen.
At an imposing 124kg and 1.94m tall, the Sharks centre Esterhuizen stepped into a revolutionary hybrid role that transformed not just his own game, but also the strategic landscape of rugby itself. Under the leadership of Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus and assistant coach Tony Brown, Esterhuizen’s involvement has evolved dramatically. He is not only fulfilling the formidable role of an inside centre but is also making waves as a flanker.
This innovative combination, coined ‘flentre’, allows the Springboks to maximise Esterhuizen’s considerable physicality and skill, creating mismatches that could very well tip the balance in closely contested matches. He was first used as a flanker by the Springboks in the 54-7 win against the Barbarians in Cape Town on 28 June 2025.
Earlier this week, Esterhuizen shared his thoughts on the role of a hybrid player at the launch of the Steco Power Tools Hybrid Craftsman campaign.
“The modern game demands players who can do more than just one job. Rugby has changed a lot over the last few years,” Esterhuizen said.
“For me, it’s always been about bringing a bit of both worlds together. I’ve got the physical side that you’d expect from a forward, but I’ve always worked hard on my skills, my passing game and my ability to read space like a back.
“Over time, that’s become a big part of my identity as a player. Being able to carry hard, defend physically, but also distribute and create opportunities for the guys around me. The hybrid player idea really reflects how the game is evolving, and I’m proud to represent that style of rugby.”
Esterhuizen elaborated on his workload and the mental preparation required as he juggled various responsibilities, including his role as Sharks captain.
“Operating at a professional level entails a significant workload, but over time, one learns to manage it effectively. Preparation plays a crucial role in this process. Physically, it’s essential to maintain strength and fitness to meet the demands of the game consistently,” said Esterhuizen.
“Equally important is the mental aspect. As a captain, your perspective shifts from focusing solely on personal performance to encompassing the team’s overall success. The task includes steering the group in the right direction, upholding high standards, and ensuring everyone remains focused on the shared objectives.
“I prioritise a process-driven approach, concentrating on immediate tasks such as the next training session, meeting, or game. By breaking it down in this manner, the workload becomes much more manageable.”
