AmaZulu secured a pivotal 1–0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban to leapfrog Kaizer Chiefs into third place in the Betway Premiership standings, moving level on 13 points with champions Orlando Pirates.
The day belonged to in-form striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, whose match-winning header sealed Usuthu’s ascension up the table while Amakhosi stumbled to a frustrating 1–1 draw away to Polokwane City.
The breakthrough in Durban arrived in the 36th minute following sharp build-up play down the flank. Nkhosikona Radebe delivered a precise cross into the box, allowing Ngwenya to rise highest between two defenders and plant a powerful header past Wendeu Merlin.
The goal saw Ngwenya rewrite the record books, becoming the first player to score in each of the opening six league matches of a PSL season.
Usuthu maintained control throughout the second half, regularly orchestrating their attacks through the dangerous left-sided pairing of Omega Mdaka and midfield rotators. Gallants’ hopes of mounting a comeback completely unravelled in the 77th minute when Edgar Manaka picked up a second yellow card, leaving the ten-man visitors unable to prevent AmaZulu from comfortably managing the closing stages to join Pirates on 13 points.
Meanwhile at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Kaizer Chiefs were left reflecting on lost ground after surrendering a 1–0 lead to settle for a point against Polokwane City.
Amakhosi took the lead in the 28th minute when Lebohang Maboe expertly controlled a lofted ball over the top of the Rise and Shine defence before slotting home.
Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen had previously kept the scoreline level with a spectacular double save in the 19th minute, while Bradley Cross and Etiosa Ighodaro both missed opportunities early in the second period to double the visitors’ lead.
The contest turned on its head in the 72nd minute through an agonising goalkeeping error. Polokwane substitute Giovanni Philander delivered a curling corner kick that caught Petersen out at his near post, creeping over the line to restore parity.
Energised by the equaliser, Polokwane nearly snatched all three points late on. Substitute Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko misdirected a free header wide from a Baartman cross, Pule Mmodi drew a dangerous foul on the edge of the box, and Faiz Abrahams flashed an ambitious bicycle kick just wide of the post.
Chiefs were unable to find a late winner, leaving Amakhosi stranded behind Usuthu on the table as Machete Moloto’s City side celebrated a hard-fought point.
