Suspended Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence Maj-Gen. Feroz Khan has been hospitalised after being shot in a suspected targeted attack in Houghton on Sunday night, just days before his appearance at the Madlanga Commission.

According to preliminary reports, two unidentified gunmen travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz opened fire on Khan before fleeing the scene.

Investigators recovered at least two spent bullet casings, while reports indicate Khan suffered gunshot wounds to his lower body.

He was rushed to Netcare Milpark Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The shooting comes at a crucial stage of the commission’s investigation into allegations of corruption, drug theft and the illicit precious metals trade.

Khan was expected to appear before the inquiry on July 1 after abandoning court attempts to stop his testimony and prevent investigators from accessing his electronic devices.

The police have confirmed the incident and launched an investigation into the matter.

Spokesperson, Brig. Athlenda Mathe, said the Acting National Commissioner has further directed that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) be incorporated into the investigation to ensure that every possible lead is pursued and that those responsible are brought to book.

However, the timing of the attack is likely to intensify scrutiny as investigators work to determine whether the shooting is linked to Khan’s anticipated appearance before the commission.

The police have warned against public speculation.

“It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the Commission,” she said.

This is a developing story.
