Police are reportedly taking a statement from political fixer and controversial North West businessman Brown Mogotsi, days after he claimed attempted murder, with his car riddled with bullets in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
Media reports on Wednesday afternoon suggested that members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were with Mogotsi and his legal team at an undisclosed location. Newzroom Afrika reported that apart from the attempted murder case, police were also questioning Mogotsi on cases of defeating the ends of justice, fraud, and corruption.
It is believed police are at this hour taking a statement from Brown Mogotsi. It’s unclear where he was located. He is in the company of his lawyers.
Mogotsi claimed his vehicle was shot at on Monday night.
He failed to pitch at the police station to make a statement yesterday.
Anti-crime activist and Crime Watch presenter on eNCA, Yusuf Abramjee posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday afternoon that: “It is believed police are at this hour taking a statement from BrownMogotsi. It’s unclear where he was located. He is in the company of his lawyers. Mogotsi claimed his vehicle was shot at on Monday night. He failed to pitch at the police station to make a statement yesterday”.
This comes after Mogotsi failed to present himself at the Vosloorus police station on Tuesday, despite earlier police appeals for him to do so.
The small Chevrolet sedan that businessman Brown Mogotsi was reportedly travelling in when it was struck by multiple bullets during the alleged attempted hit in Vosloorus.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that investigators had found no blood or evidence of injury at the scene. Mathe said an attempted murder case had been opened for investigation.
Journalists asked Mathe to clarify what would happen if police established that the attempted murder incident was staged.
She said if that is proven, Mogotsi would be charged: “Absolutely, that is defeating the ends of justice. If we are pulling out police resources, mobilising police resources, various experts, members of Visible Policing, and detectives to attend to a particular crime scene, that is a diversion of resources.
“If we do find out that this was staged … we are not there yet. We have not made that determination. We are still investigating. We are hoping it was not staged and that this is genuine, that there was an actual attempt on his life. That is why we have registered a case of attempted murder.”
Police probe continues
As of Wednesday afternoon, SAPS had not yet issued an official statement confirming their engagement with Mogotsi, but sources within law enforcement told IOL that the police were collecting Mogotsi’s version of events and conducting ballistic analysis on the recovered vehicle.
Police are expected to finalise Mogotsi’s formal statement and complete forensic tests in the coming days. Crime analysts have warned that if evidence shows the incident was fabricated, Mogotsi could face charges of defeating the ends of justice.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
