Caitlin Venniker’s debut book, “Unleashed: A Vet’s Memoir of Heartache, Hairballs and Hope”, serves as both a professional record and a personal reflection on her life in veterinary medicine.
The South African veterinarian and writer traces her journey from training at Onderstepoort, South Africa’s only veterinary school, into the fast-moving and often unpredictable world of private practice.
Her work takes her across South Africa, the United Kingdom and the Middle East, where she encounters different systems of care and different pressures in everyday clinical work.
The memoir moves through the demands of the profession, including difficult consultations, challenging clients, emergency cases that arrive without warning and situations that range from routine treatment to “cows with anger issues”.
These moments show the practical side of veterinary work, where decisions must be made quickly, and outcomes are not always certain.
The narrative has been described as “intensely honest” and “hilarious”, reflecting how humour and strain often exist together in the same environment.
Alongside professional experience, Venniker also reflects on her personal life and development. She writes about managing long shifts, relying on coffee to get through demanding days and navigating relationships while working irregular hours.
She also considers the emotional weight of the job, including the grief that comes with losing animals and the wider mental health challenges faced by those in the veterinary field.
These elements form the emotional core of the memoir, where care for animals and the cost of that care are closely linked.
Outside of her work, Venniker lives with rescue animals, including a one-eared cat and a “scruffy desert dog”.
Her move into publishing was influenced by earlier recognition after winning a writing competition with a story about a truffle pig named Flora, which encouraged her to pursue longer-form writing.
At the time of the book’s release, she shared her reaction, saying: “First time seeing ‘Unleashed’ in the wild! I’ve dreamed of this moment for a long time. Thanks to @panmacmillansa for making this dream a reality.”
She also reflected on the process of finalising the manuscript, describing how she once saw another author sharing printed page proofs on a beach and imagined a similar moment for herself.
She later acknowledged that her own reality was different, saying that instead of a beach setting, she worked through proofs at home with tea and her dog beside her while preparing for publication and the year ahead.
