Starting June 26 2026, Cape Town libraries and recreation centres will host a winter holiday programme featuring reading, coding, sports, and games for the youth.
Scheduled to occur across various recreation facilities—such as community centres, sports grounds, play parks, and green spaces—the Recreation and Parks Department’s initiative features a diverse lineup of sports and indoor games.
Meanwhile, local library events will offer interactive opportunities such as reading challenges, coding workshops, and cookie-making.
By leveraging a wide network of local City facilities, these holiday initiatives are specifically designed to provide youth with safe, supervised, and productive environments. These spaces serve as vital hubs where young residents can escape the cold and enjoy their school holidays through a mix of physical activity and cognitive engagement.
By keeping these community assets open and active, the City ensures that children have access to constructive outlets that foster personal growth and social interaction during their break from formal education.
Councillor Francine Higham, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, noted: “The winter break offers a chance to discover new hobbies, enjoy ourselves, or gain new expertise.”
She highlighted that local libraries and recreation centres are providing programmes to ensure youth remain engaged throughout the holidays. Higham urged guardians and parents to check local schedules so that young people can fully benefit from these holiday opportunities.
