Record-breaking Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams was visibly emotional on Thursday morning after leading his side to their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout stage appearance.
Bafana secured their spot in the round of 32 following a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea. They finished second in Group A, trailing only co-hosts Mexico, who maintained a perfect opening-phase record, including a victory over South Africa in the tournament opener.
Coach Hugo Broos’s side had been largely written off by pundits following their initial loss to El Tri and a subsequent draw against the Czech Republic. Entering the final fixture against South Korea as clear underdogs, they defied the critics to qualify.
Displaying immense determination in Monterrey, the squad secured a crucial three points thanks to a second-half goal from Thapelo Maseko. His clinical strike capped off a stellar individual performance that earned him the official FIFA Player of the Match award.
Williams etched his name into the history books as the first Bafana captain to lead the national team to the World Cup knockout stage after three previous failed tournament attempts by the nation. He reflected on the monumental milestone during an emotional post-match interview with SABC Sport.
“It’s amazing. I’m lost for words,” Williams said. “I’m not sure there’s a better word than proud. I am ecstatic and incredibly proud, especially considering what this side has endured. Dealing with doubters and the stress of playing at this elite level is never easy.”
“Keeping a clean sheet against such high-quality opposition, and defending the way we did, is no small feat. It speaks volumes about the character of this group. We were under immense pressure, but we stayed strong.”
With a youthful and exciting squad — including Maseko, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi — Williams is confident that the future of South African football is in safe hands.
“Given the mentality and character of these boys, I am excited for the future of this country. They are so young, yet they are competing at this elite level,” Williams noted. “I feel like an old head already, but the experience they are gaining will only benefit the nation. It’s amazing, and I am proud to lead this group.”
Whilst the squad will celebrate their victory well into the night, they will soon return to work. Their focus must quickly shift to Sunday’s maiden knockout stage clash against tournament co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles.
