Emergency services have been dispatched to a major incident on the N2 northbound near Chesterville, KwaZulu-Natal where a Cash-In-Transit (CIT) vehicle has been robbed and subsequently blown up by suspected criminals.

Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said members were called to the scene on Monday around 7pm.

“Paramedics arrived after South African Police Service (SAPS) had made the scene safe to find hundreds of members of the public looting money on the ground. SAPS quickly dispersed the looters and paramedics were shown to two security personnel who were in the vehicle at the time of the robbery,” said Jamieson.

He added that paramedics were then directed to two security personnel who had been inside the cash-in-transit vehicle at the time of the robbery. One of the men sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of an explosion during the incident and was treated on scene

The second security guard was assessed and did not require extensive medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the N2 has been completely closed by SAPS and Metro Police to allow for ongoing investigations. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

An investigation is underway to determine the events leading up to the robbery.
