The Hungarian Grand Prix has barely begun, yet some of the spotlight has already shifted to the fight unfolding inside the Ferrari garage.

Charles Leclerc fired the opening shot on Friday by topping the first practice session at the Hungaroring, continuing the momentum that has seen him emerge as one of Formula One’s form drivers.

Fresh from back-to-back podium finishes, the Monegasque looked at home around the tight Budapest circuit, comfortably finishing ahead of Max Verstappen while Lewis Hamilton could only manage third.

It may only be practice, but the psychological battle has already begun. Hamilton arrived in Hungary believing the circuit offers Ferrari one of its best chances to challenge Mercedes.

The King of Hungary has spoken confidently about the team’s recent progress, insisting the gap to the front has become much smaller and that Ferrari finally has a package capable of fighting at the sharp end.

But before Hamilton could make his own statement, his team-mate stole the headlines during the first practice session on Friday.

Leclerc’s fastest lap was another reminder that he has rediscovered the form that made him Ferrari’s leading contender earlier this season.

Although his session ended prematurely with a mechanical issue, the pace had already been shown. The benchmark had been set. Now the pressure shifts across the garage.

Hamilton has steadily grown more comfortable with the SF26, showing flashes of the speed that convinced Ferrari to bring him to Maranello.

But flashes alone will not be enough if Leclerc continues to gain the edge in the internal battle. Every session, every qualifying lap and every race weekend matters when two elite drivers share the same machinery. Even if Hamilton was pivotal in preparing said machinery.

For Hamilton, Hungary represents more than another Grand Prix. It is an opportunity to remind the paddock that champions respond when challenged. The Briton has built his legacy on answering adversity with performance.

Time and again throughout his career he has bounced back after difficult weekends, and Ferrari will be hoping another response is on the horizon.

Friday’s first session belonged to Leclerc, whose blistering pace ensured he landed the first punch in Budapest. The battle for Hungary may only just be beginning, but the fight for Ferrari’s bragging rights is already in full swing.
