Close but not quite for SA sides as Stormers left frustrated in Europe amid officiating debate

There was a bit of everything in the latest The Last Word on Rugby episode — frustration, debate, and just enough optimism about South Africa’s franchises in the European rugby competitions.

Following a frustrating exit from the Champions and Challenge Cups, the panel got stuck straight into the ongoing struggles of the country’s franchises in the tournaments, and it wasn’t sugar-coated.

With all the muscle and pedigree, the local sides just haven’t quite clicked in Europe this season. Even with full-strength sides, the Stormers and Bulls could not secure victories against Toulon and Glasgow, respectively, but there are positive signs that the SA teams are close to a big breakthrough overseas.

Still, frustration with officiating continues to stand in the way, adding another layer to their challenges. Look at the Stormers-Toulon match in France — a game that will still leave a sour taste.

The refereeing took centre stage, and not in a good way.

The discussion circled around inconsistency, with a few key calls seemingly swinging the match. It wasn’t about blaming officials outright, but there was a shared sense that the lack of clarity is becoming a real issue in big games, especially when SA sides travel in Europe.

And the question remains: should the franchises send their strongest sides if they are going to fight against the home team, their vocal supporters and the whistle of the referee?

With the attention of the Bulls, Stormers, Sharks and Lions turning to the United Rugby Championship (URC) from next weekend, there will be a sense of hope that all four sides can make it into the playoffs.

All eyes will be on a couple of uncapped players at the franchises who will have four more URC league matches to impress Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus and his assistants.
