A man was shot dead on Avoca Road in Greenwood Park this morning, during a suspected attempted hijacking.

It is alleged the man was shot while leaving his home.

Gareth Naidoo, from KZN VIP Protection Services, said that upon hearing the commotion, members of the community alerted emergency services.

Upon arrival, the KZN VIP Protection Services Medics established that while the man was exiting a driveway, a white Toyota Etios pulled up next to his vehicle. A male suspect allegedly exited the Etios and fired multiple shots at the driver before fleeing in an unknown direction.

“Paramedics attempted to stabilise the patient, who was in critical condition. Sadly, after a lengthy time working, together with another private ambulance service, the patient was declared dead due to the extent of his injuries. The circumstances leading up to the shooting cannot be confirmed at this time, pending an SAPS investigation.”

Vishal Sewsankar, the vice chairperson of the Greenwood Park community policing forum, said: “It was a very unfortunate incident and an investigation is underway. However, crime in our area is moderate.”

The incident is being investigated by Greenwood Park SAPS.
