The Consulate General of India in Cape Town marked Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary—which is recognised globally by the United Nations as the International Day of Non-Violence—by hosting commemorative events at two major Western Cape academic institutions on October 2, 2026.
The commemorations included the launch of an “India Corner” at Stellenbosch University’s Library and a floral tribute ceremony at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
The India Corner was inaugurated at the Stellenbosch University Library. The corner is set up with about a hundred books gifted by India to the University.
‘India Corner’ launched at Stellenbosch University
At Stellenbosch University, Consul General Ruby Jaspreet and Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Deresh Ramjugernath jointly inaugurated the “India Corner” at the university’s library.
The India Corner was inaugurated at the Stellenbosch University Library. The corner is set up with about a hundred books gifted by India to the University.
As part of the launch, the Consulate gifted approximately 100 books to the university library. The gifted collection covers various topics, including Indian history, polity, economy, and culture. The Government of India establishes these dedicated reading corners in universities worldwide to promote academic, cultural, and people-to-people connections.

The inauguration event was attended by key university representatives, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Sibusiso Moyo and Chief Director of Library and Information Services Ellen Tise, who expressed appreciation to the Indian government for the academic gift.

Floral Tributes Paid at UWC
In a separate ceremony organised in partnership with the University of the Western Cape, officials gathered at the university premises to honour Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy.

UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert John Balfour addressed attendees on Gandhi’s deep connection to South Africa and reflected on his philosophy of non-violence. Following the address, Professor Balfour and Consul General Ruby Jaspreet laid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi located in the university library.

The 72-inch bronze bust was gifted to UWC by the Government of India through the Consulate General in 2008. University faculty members and visiting members of the diplomatic corps joined the leadership in paying their respects during the ceremony.
