There are few bigger matchups in football than Portugal versus Spain, and that blockbuster clash will take centre stage on Monday at the FIFA World Cup.
The two European giants will face off for a place in the quarter-finals at Dallas Stadium in Arlington.
Kick-off is at 9pm SA time.
Spain head into the clash as favourites with an estimated 50% chance of victory, but there will not be many paying close attention to the bookmakers’ odds.
Chief among those dismissing the favourites tag will be Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old confirmed in the early hours of Monday morning that this World Cup will be his final tournament for Portugal before retiring from international football.
Throughout his long and glittering career, Ronaldo has inevitably been compared with Argentina’s Lionel Messi. While their achievements have been debated ad nauseam, there is one accolade glaringly absent from Ronaldo’s trophy cabinet — a FIFA World Cup winners’ medal.
That makes this Round of 16 encounter all the more significant, as it represents Ronaldo’s final opportunity to lift football’s biggest prize.
Of course, that is looking well ahead. Portugal must first overcome one of the tournament favourites.
The 2010 world champions Spain will be hoping to rekindle the magic they produced in South Africa 16 years ago. Since then, La Roja crashed out in the group stage in 2014 before suffering Round of 16 exits in both 2018 and 2022.
