The Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus in Parliament has elected George Michalakis as the party’s new parliamentary leader.

Michalakis has served as the DA’s chief whip in the National Assembly since June 2024, following the May 2024 general elections.

His appointment follows the election of Geordin Hill-Lewis as the DA’s federal leader.

Desiree van der Walt, DA caucus chairperson, confirmed the appointment.

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) today elected George Michalakis as our new Parliamentary Leader. He will spearhead the DA’s efforts to rescue South Africa in line with our commitments to the electorate in the last election.”

The party expressed confidence that Michalakis would advance its principles in Parliament.

“The DA is confident that Michalakis will vigorously lead the DA in Parliament in line with our values and principles and fight for what is best for all South Africans in Parliament.”

The party said Michalakis would spearhead the DA’s work in the National Legislature and ensure the government was subjected to rigorous oversight.

“This includes leading the DA’s legislative agenda, such as our bill to replace BEE and bar impeached officials from serving in Parliament, as well as making sure that power is held to account.

“South Africans deserve a Parliament that works for and represents them.”

“With George Michalakis at the helm, the DA will continue to use parliament as a platform to fight for all South Africans,” van der Walt added.

Hill-Lewis chose to remain in his role as mayor of the City of Cape Town rather than move into national government, leaving the party to appoint a new leader in the National Assembly.

Michalakis previously served as the party’s chief whip in Parliament before being elected to the position.
