Debutants shine as ruthless Springboks blank Wales 43-0 in Durban

The Springboks thrashed Wales 43-0 in their Nations Championship clash in front of nearly 50000 fans at Kings Park Stadium in Durban on Saturday, with debutant flyhalf Vusi Moyo and wing Jaco Williams enjoying memorable international bows on home soil as the bench drove home the advantage in the second half.

The opening exchanges were dominated by an aerial battle before the Springboks’ loose forwards took control.

Lock Cobus Wiese sparked the breakthrough with a barnstorming carry through midfield, shrugging off defenders before offloading to his brother, Jasper Wiese, who crashed over from close range in the fifth minute. Moyo successfully added the conversion.

Veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 14th minute after the Boks once again overwhelmed the Welsh defence, with Moyo maintaining his perfect record from the tee.

Wales battled gamely but struggled to gain any meaningful territory or possession as the Springboks dominated the collisions and breakdown.

The Boks capped a superb first half after the hooter when Moyo produced a perfectly weighted cross-kick for Jesse Kriel to gather and dive over in the corner, sending the world champions into the break 19-0 ahead.

Fellow Sharks back Williams crossed almost straight from the restart for the bonus-point try, with Moyo landing his third conversion to stretch the lead to 26-0.

Wales enjoyed their best spell soon afterwards, but the Springboks absorbed the pressure superbly, with Paul de Villiers producing a crucial breakdown turnover to halt the attack.

The replacements then took over. Substitute scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies finished off another sweeping move in the 63rd minute before Kurt-Lee Arendse dotted down five minutes later after a clever pass from replacement flyhalf Manie Libbok. De Villiers put the icing on the cake, scoring in the corner to complete the seven-try mauling.
