Popular radio personality Sipho “DJ Sgqemeza” Mbatha has released a statement, setting the record straight about his exit from Ukhozi FM.

The annual radio shuffle season always comes with surprises, and DJ Sgqemeza’s departure was quite the surprise for listeners.

“Ukhozi FM did not renew my contract for the upcoming financial year. This is within their right and I respect the organisation’s prerogative.

“However, the process and communication surrounding this decision raised serious concerns, including notable inconsistencies, which I formally escalated to SABC management. The metrics used to reach this decision are, in my respectful view, deeply concerning.

“I will refrain from detailing them, as it is frankly embarrassing that such consideration could be relied upon at management level. I say this in the interest of protecting the integrity of the SABC and Ukhozi FM brands I have proudly served for many years.”

DJ Sgqemeza clarifies the circumstances surrounding his exit from Ukhozi FM, addressing misconceptions and expressing gratitude to his supporters.

DJ Sgqemeza co-hosted the Vuka Afrika Breakfast Show from 6.00am to 9.00am alongside Mroza Buthelezi. His name was not on Ukhozi FM’s 2026 line-up; instead, radio and television personality Velani “Vee” Mthembu’s name was announced.

In his statement, DJ Sgqemeza clarified that he did not request to be moved from the prime-time slot to an evening show due to growing church commitments, as reported.

“This is not true. I did not initiate such a request, and this narrative has created a false impression that my departure was voluntary and mutually agreed upon.

“While I remain respectful of the SABC and Ukhozi FM as institutions, my concern lies with how certain individuals within management have handled this matter.”

DJ Sgqemeza thanked advertisers and listeners who supported his journey from community radio, SABC news, radio drama show and the various shows he hosted. He also let everyone know that he hasn’t hung up his mic as he is available and open to future opportunities.
