Police in the North West have urged residents to remain alert as the province enters the second phase of the Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela II, warning that year-end activities often come with heightened safety risks.

Provincial spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said citizens should be cautious whether at home, in public spaces, or on the roads.

“We urge members of the public to be cautious while at home, in shopping malls, tourist attractions or when travelling on major freeways and provincial routes,” he said.

Mokgwabone noted that the festive period is routinely marked by increased alcohol consumption, which contributes to crime and road fatalities.

“This time of the year is known for specific crime dynamics, including alcohol abuse by some citizens and motorists,” he said, adding that drivers must remain vigilant.

“Motorists are urged to avoid driving under the influence and to obey road traffic regulations.”

Police also warned liquor traders to comply with the North West Liquor Licensing Act of 2016.

“Law enforcement officers will not hesitate to deal decisively with anybody who sells liquor in contradiction of the licence,” Mokgwabone said.

With schools set to close for the holidays, the police appealed to communities to help protect school property from vandalism and break-ins.

“It is vital that schools are safe from any form of vandalism or break-ins,” Mokgwabone said.

He urged School Governing Bodies, Community Police Forums and residents to work with police to ensure that learners “find schools in the condition they left them, allowing for the timeous start of learning in 2026”.
