Dolphins fume over fading light as WP Cobras clinch dramatic late victory at Newlands

Western Province Cobras secured a dramatic 44-run win over the Dolphins in the fading light at Newlands on Sunday.

Left-arm spinner Kyle Simmonds and part-timer Sinalo Gobeni combined to dismantle a Dolphins middle and lower order that had, for a period, threatened to chase down 257 in 60 overs after Cobras captain Daniel Smith had offered up a sporting declaration.

Simmonds finished with 4/91, but it was Gobeni’s part-time spin that landed the decisive blow when Okuhle Cele popped a catch to short leg David Bedingham to spark jubilant scenes among the home players as the Cobras wrapped up victory with the Dolphins all out for 212.

It was almost fate that Bedingham had a hand in the final dismissal. The Proteas top-order batter was the story of the match from start to finish. Having passed 10,000 first-class runs on Saturday, he followed a first-innings 129 with a second-innings 114, becoming the game’s dominant figure across all four days and offering a timely reminder to national selectors of his form ahead of a packed Test summer.

The runs arrived on the back of a productive County Championship season with Durham, where he topped a thousand first-class runs in helping the county to promotion — form he has now carried straight into the domestic season at home.

The Cobras were made to work for their victory when Dolphins captain Marques Ackerman threatened to make a mockery of the target with a blistering 60 off just 62 balls, striking freely enough that a home win briefly looked in doubt.

But Ackerman’s dismissal triggered a collapse that turned the match. The Dolphins lost four wickets for 20 runs inside seven overs, with Simmonds the chief destroyer — bowling both Josh Richards, who had made a defiant 54, and Khaya Zondo with successive deliveries of real quality. Tshepo Moreki then produced a beauty of his own, an inswinging delivery that removed Prenelan Subrayen’s off stump, before a horror mix-up in the field ran out Buyanda Majola and left the Dolphins’ innings in ruins.

The visitors, particularly head coach Quinton Friend, were incensed at the close as the umpires took numerous light readings through the final session yet allowed play to continue for longer than had been the case across the first three days of the match.

Friend had a heated exchange with umpire Abdoelah Steenkamp at the completion of the match.

The win moves Western Province back into contention in what was otherwise a quiet round of the first-class series — Boland and North West shared 1,238 runs across four days in a high-scoring draw in Paarl, featuring double centuries from Diego Rosier and Lehan Botha, while fixtures involving the Warriors, Titans, Lions, and Knights were all but washed out by rain.
