The Durban Metro Police have revealed that more than 130 drivers were arrested for drunk driving during coordinated roadblocks across Durban on Friday night.
The arrests happened during a coordinated effort with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to improve road safety and reduce criminal activity across the city.
“Last night, the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS), working in collaboration with RTI and SAPS, conducted coordinated roadblock operations across various parts of Durban as part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and curb criminal activity”.
According to the police, the arrests were made at key areas including Point, Umbilo, Durban Central, and Durban North, with the highest number, 45, recorded in Durban North.
The police also revealed that during the operation, one of the suspects arrested was identified as a member of the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS), adding “this reinforces the principle that no one is above the law”.
“During the operation, one of the suspects was identified as a DMPS member and was arrested. This reinforces the principle that no one is above the law, and all offenders are treated equally, regardless of position or affiliation.”
“DMPS remains committed to zero tolerance on drunk driving and will continue to work with law enforcement partners to ensure safer roads for all road users”.
Last week, IOL also reported that a father and his daughter were among more than 45 motorists arrested for drunk driving during a Road Traffic Inspectorate operation in Mtubatuba. The daughter had allegedly arrived intoxicated to collect her arrested father.
“The RTI team assigned to clean up our road network in Mtubatuba is executing #NenzaniLaEzweni with precision. The team is firm and determined to reduce road fatalities. We thank the SAPS for augmenting our operations in Mtubatuba,” Duma said.
