DStv subscribers can breathe a sigh of relief as channels such as CNN International, Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, and TLC, among others, have been saved from being axed.
A deal has been struck between pay-TV giant MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, and global media titan Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
CANAL+ released a statement confirming that a multi-year and multi-territory agreement had been signed between its long-standing partner, Warner Bros. Discovery.
The expanded agreement covers both the distribution of HBO Max and the renewal of several Warner Bros. Discovery thematic channels across numerous regions in Africa and Europe.
The agreement includes the renewal of the distribution of 12 Warner Bros. Discovery thematic channels across Multichoice Group territories, with some offered exclusively.
The channels are CNN International and Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, Cartoonito Porto, Discovery Channel, Discovery Family, Real Time ID, TLC, HGTV, Travel, TNT Africa, and Food Network.
The last-minute deal means that subscribers can still watch their favourite shows such as “90 Day Fiance” on TLC.
Negotiations between Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. and Canal+ SA about renewing a content agreement for South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice Group over price were intense, but everything worked out in the end.
Multichoice recently lost four Paramount channels (MTV Base, BET Africa, CBS Justice, and CBS Reality). The closure is part of a larger reshuffle by Paramount Global, which has been scaling back linear TV operations across Africa, Europe, and other regions to focus on streaming and global content.
BET Africa and MTV Base have been discontinued on DStv as of January 1, 2026.
