A fierce battle between two of KwaZulu-Natal’s top-flight football clubs ended in a 1-1 draw as Durban City took on Golden Arrows on Tuesday night at Chatsworth Stadium.
The Durban boys in blue were the aggressors of the two, with Arrows pedalling on the back foot for the majority of the second half. But a lucky goal by Junior Dion made sure Durban walked away with a single point.
The opening segment was an action-packed sequence of play, with Durban having more chances at goal, opening up with an attack down the left wing. Gavin Hunt’s men took a visible step up from their performance against Chippa United last week, completing passes with composure – even at the back.
The Golden Arrows made a good few moves into Durban’s 18-yard box early on, but the defence effectively dealt with the threat.
A continued pounding of attacks resulted in a free-kick just outside Arrows’ 18-yard box. Number 7 Haashim Domingo delivered the free-kick that ended up with Jerome Karelse scoring an own goal to convert the Durban attack.
Arrows did not wait for the half-time speech and immediately went on the offensive. Just before the half-time mark, Arrows kept piling on the pressure with multiple attacks until finally Junior Dion slotted in an equaliser that Durban let in too easily.

In two words, the second half was simply a dogfight. Neither Arrows nor Durban let off the throttle and kept on the offensive, but it was Durban who got the upper hand, spending most of the next 45 minutes in the Arrows half.
Durban attacked much more frequently in the second half but couldn’t seem to get the ball into the Arrows box.
That was until super-sub Joslin Kamatuka came on and again brought with him the willpower to get the ball into the 6-yard box. But the Arrows defence just would not crack.
Durban had their share of shaky moments at the tail end of the match, but their defence looked much firmer than last week’s, bringing the game to a 1-1 draw after 94 minutes.
