The Durban University of Technology has clarified that it has no affiliation with an alleged bogus Matric school operating from its premises.
Earlier this week, the Democratic Alliance sounded the alarm after hundreds of Grade 12 learners arrived to write their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations but were not issued with legitimate examination numbers.
Democratic Alliance spokesperson on Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Sakhile Mngadi, added that the school, ‘Matric Scholars’, reportedly under the leadership of Nombuso Mtshali, received over R8,000 from each learner.
DUT noted that while it was aware of the reports, it has no relationship with Matric Scholars.
“It has recently come to the attention of the institution that Matric Scholars was operating on its premises without authorisation.
“An internal investigation is currently under way to determine the circumstances surrounding this matter,” DUT stated.
It added that Mtshali is not a DUT staffer and management is cooperating with police to gather further evidence.
“As a public higher education institution, DUT is authorised to offer only programmes that are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Any academic or training collaboration with an external organisation is undertaken strictly in accordance with institutional policies and governance protocols, including the signing of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which must be approved by the DUT Senate.
“The university does not offer, endorse or support any programme that falls outside the scope of higher education,” the institution said.
