It was a tense morning on the N1 road near Hanover on Wednesday, when a minibus taxi carrying 20 passengers from Cape Town to Mozambique overturned after a mechanical failure with its trailer.

The situation could have been far worse. Of the 20 people on board, which included 14 adults and six children, aged between five and seven, only three sustained minor injuries.

Speaking on the scene, South African Police Service (SAPS) emphasised that their immediate priority was the well-being of the travellers.

“Our first job was to make sure everyone was safe, particularly the children,” said SAPS. “We are incredibly relieved that there were no fatalities today, but this serves as a harsh reminder of the dangers on our roads.”

Regarding the cause of the crash, SAPS added, “When you are traveling long distances, the condition of your vehicle is non-negotiable. This accident was triggered by a trailer failure, which underlines just how critical it is for drivers to ensure every part of their vehicle is roadworthy before setting off.”

While some passengers held the necessary travel documentation, others were found to be without the required paperwork. This aspect of the case has been referred to immigration authorities, and the Department of Social Development has stepped in to assist the children involved.

The response involved a coordinated effort from several agencies, with the SAPS, EMS, Social Services, and immigration officials all working together to manage the scene.

The police are using this incident to appeal to all motorists to stay alert and prioritise rigorous vehicle maintenance.
