The daughter of an elderly murder victim has pleaded for the police to find her mother’s brutal killer.
Gog’ Busisiwe Nokuthula MaMkhwanazi Ngema, 75, was killed in her home in Macambini, Mandeni, on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on Sunday.
Gog’ MaMkhwanazi’s daughter, Khanyi Ngema, expressed her frustration, stating: “I wish the police would do their job to find the killer, as it is unacceptable for an elderly person to be killed so brutally.”
Nyoni police are investigating a murder case. It is alleged that on Sunday night, an unknown number of suspects entered Gog’ MaMkhwanazi’s home, wielding pangas. The suspects reportedly hacked her with the pangas, and she sustained multiple wounds on her body, which led to her death.
The ANC in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region said that preliminary investigations indicate that the perpetrators first broke into an outside room belonging to Gog’ MaMkhwanazi’s son, who was at work, and stole household items.
They then proceeded to the main house, where they found Gog’ MaMkhwanazi asleep and attacked her. Her granddaughter, who was asleep in another bedroom, was not discovered and thus escaped harm.
Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Thabani Mdlalose, and the Speaker of the Council, Councillor Phindile Sishi, visited the Ngema family to offer support.
Mdlalose said the council wanted to meet the family, comfort them, get a clear understanding of what happened, and strengthen them during this difficult time.
He said they are heeding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call regarding the abuse of women. Therefore, they are including Gog’ MaMkhwanazi in the programme, highlighting that this is also a form of abuse against women.
Speaker of the Council, Councillor Phindile Sishi, and the Mayor of Mandeni Local Municipality, Councillor Thabani Mdlalose, visited the Ngema family to provide support.
“As it is understood that the mother was elderly, she lived with her children and grandchildren, but we condemn this crime and leave it to the police to take the lead in this matter,” Mdlalose said.
“We, the Mandeni council, came here to the Ngema home to offer condolences and to gather information on the available support programmes.”
Mdlalose said the community can be assured that they have reported the matter to the police and expect them to devote all necessary efforts to the investigation.
Mdlalose emphasised the government’s obligation to support traumatised families. This commitment includes providing mental health counselling programmes for victims of such incidents and helping ensure that the funeral service and arrangements for their relative are carried out respectfully and with dignity.
“Legally, we are in deep water as a council because a senior member of the community has been brutally harmed here. As we are here, we open our arms to the family to strengthen them and let them know that we are here for everything they might need. We will walk with them all the way until they are able to lay Gogo in her final resting place,” Mdlalose said.
