Feroz Khan back in hospital days before Madlanga Commission appearance

Major-General Feroz Khan has been re-admitted to a Johannesburg hospital, just days before he is expected to face questions at the Madlanga Commission.

The suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head is reportedly back in hospital nearly two months after he was shot and seriously wounded in Houghton, according to the SABC.

Khan was shot on June 28 and spent time in hospital recovering from his injuries.

His latest hospitalisation comes at a critical time, with the senior police officer subpoenaed to appear before the Madlanga Commission this week.

Khan was also recently served with a further Rule 3 notice requiring him to respond to additional questions from the commission.

The commission has already heard evidence concerning Khan in his absence after he was unable to testify following the shooting.

He is a key figure in the inquiry, which is investigating allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference in SA’s criminal justice system.

The commission has heard a series of allegations involving Khan, including claims concerning corruption, tender fraud, the leaking of state information and alleged interference in criminal investigations.

Khan has not yet had an opportunity to answer the evidence before the commission in person.

His planned appearance has therefore attracted significant attention, particularly after his shooting shortly before he was due to testify.

While Khan’s health and potential appearance before the commission remain under scrutiny, his future in the police service is also hanging in the balance.

Khan has taken the SAPS to the Labour Court to challenge an internal disciplinary process that reportedly recommended his dismissal.

The disciplinary proceedings were reportedly concluded while Khan was dealing with medical problems and unable to attend. His lawyer has disputed that Khan has already been dismissed and is challenging the process in court.
