A swift police operation has led to the seizure of mandrax tablets worth an estimated R240,000 and the arrest of five suspects at a shopping mall in Ravensmead, Western Cape.

The suspects, two women and three men aged between 24 and 32, were arrested on Thursday, 31 July 2025, after law enforcement received a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle.

“Members followed up on information received about a silver VW Polo with drugs in it at a fast food retailer at a shopping mall in Robert Sobukwe Road, Ravensmead,” said police spokesperson Captain Frederick C. van Wyk.

“The members immediately operationalised the information and found the five suspects with 6,000 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R240,000.”

The operation was the result of a collaboration between the Western Cape Flying Squad and Metro Police aimed at tackling drug distribution networks in the province.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 4, on charges relating to drug possession.

In a separate incident the following day, a 28-year-old man was arrested in Delft for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The members received information about a male with a firearm in his possession at the mentioned address,” said van Wyk.

“On their arrival, the suspect fitting the description jumped the fence, and the members gave chase.”

The man was caught in a neighbouring yard and found with a 9mm firearm and eight rounds of ammunition.

He will also appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on August 4.
