Western Cape police opened an inquest after the discovery of what is believed to be parts of a foetus at the Klapmuts sewage pump station on July 12.
According to police, the incident was reported at approximately 8.30am, by a municipal employee from the Stellenbosch Municipality, who was on duty at the time.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed the incident to IOL News.
“Klapmuts [SA Police Service] SAPS registered an inquest case for further investigation following the discovery of what is believed to be parts of a foetus by municipal personnel on duty at the Klapmuts sewage station on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at about 8.30am,” Pojie said.
He added that the municipal employee contacted police after the initial discovery.
Potjie said that upon arrival, the police recovered additional remains that were handed over to Forensic Pathology Services for analysis to determine the possible origin.
The police are appealing to the public for assistance.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111,” Pojie said.
Meanwhile, the Stellenbosch Municipality has expressed deep shock and sadness over the incident.
“The municipality is deeply shocked and horrified by this senseless and heartbreaking incident. We are currently arranging trauma counselling and support services for the affected staff members,” the municipality said in a statement.
“This is a deeply disturbing event, and our thoughts are with all those affected. We urge anyone with information that may assist the police investigation to please come forward.”
