Former Kaizer Chiefs star Patrick Mayo has advised his son Khanyisa to put in the extra work after he completed his move to the Soweto giants.
The young Mayo arrived at Naturena on Friday to begin his season-long loan from Algerian outfit CR Belouizdad.
Having spent four years at Chiefs, the older Mayo knew what it took to play for the club, and imparted some sage advice to his son, who now gets the opportunity to walk in his footsteps at Naturena.
“The only thing he needs to do is to work extra hard at a team like Kaizer Chiefs, there is no other way,” said Patrick, as quoted by KickOff.
“He needs to familiarise himself with things like extra training. Arriving early at training to practise set pieces will help him settle more quickly… Nothing beats hard work. If the boy works hard, he will achieve everything he wants to achieve with Chiefs,” he said.
“I think he will have a good season at Chiefs because he is more focused now.”
The older Mayo began his career at Mthatha’s Bush Bucks and briefly played for SuperSport United before moving to Kaizer Chiefs in 2003, when Khanyisa was only five years old.
Like his son, Mayo Sr played up front but was also used often in the heart of defence. He left Chiefs for Thanda Royal Zulu in 2007 and saw out his playing days at hometown club Bay United, while also earning 18 caps for Bafana Bafana.
Now, with the weight of his father’s legacy behind him and his own reputation as a proven finisher, Khanyisa Mayo steps into a pivotal chapter of his career. Chiefs fans will be eager to see whether he can translate that advice – and his talent – into goals that could help restore the Soweto giants to the summit of South African football.
