Mamelodi Sundowns are eager to qualify for the CAF Champions League final for the second season in a row as a testament to the key values they have built their success on in recent years.
Sundowns will face Esperance in the Champions League semi-final second leg at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off). They already have one foot in the final after winning the first leg 1-0 in Tunis, Tunisia, last Sunday.
However, such is the desire within the group to perform convincingly and avoid complacency, they will approach the clash determined to put on a strong display and secure victory, even though a draw would be enough to see them progress.
The winning culture at Sundowns was established many years ago, but has been particularly evident over the past decade, with the club winning their maiden continental title and eight successive league crowns.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Sundowns defender Keagan Johannes – who could fill in for the suspended Grant Kekana – revealed the secret behind the club’s consistency and the seamless integration of new players.
“When you join Mamelodi Sundowns, you already know what’s expected of you based on the history and philosophy of the club,” Johannes said. “The club has been consistent in the Champions League, and that doesn’t come overnight – there’s hard work behind it.
“There are sleepless nights studying games and constantly trying to improve. A lot of discipline goes into reaching that level and staying there.
“As players coming into the club, you’ve already been identified. You know what’s expected to ensure the club continues to thrive and move in the right direction.”
Progression to the final would also be a notable milestone for coach Miguel Cardoso. It would mark the third time the Portuguese tactician reaches the final of Africa’s premier club competition in as many attempts, having done so with Esperance and Sundowns in previous seasons.
