Siphamandla Khumalo has been sentenced to imprisonment for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend, Nomfundo Msibi at a taxi rank outside Gateway Mall, last year.
IOL reported that the accused was convicted in the Durban High Court on Monday for the murder of his ex-girlfriend over a lay-by argument. The incident took place in August 2024 and Khumalo was arrested at the scene.
The state presented a CCTV footage showing Khumalo repeatedly stabbing Msibi over 20 times.
Senior State Advocate Krishen Shah has argued that this murder was premeditated.
She argued that the killing of women by male intimate partners is the most extreme form of intimate-partner violence. She pointed to research that showed that almost three women were killed by their intimate partners per day in South Africa.
She further stated that out of two women murdered, one is killed by her partner.
“If a person kills another, this is the ultimate negation of the right to life. It is my view that the nature of the offence and the interests of society demand that the crimes committed by the accused be severely punished,” said Shah.
