Ghana have fired coach Otto Addo with just over two months to go until the FIFA World Cup, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) revealed early on Tuesday morning.
Mere hours after losing 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart, the GFA released a statement confirming the sacking, saying: “The association wishes to thank (Addo) sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
The loss on Monday night was the Black Stars’ fourth consecutive defeat. Last week, the nation were thrashed 5-1 by Austria. Previously, they had also lost to Japan and South Korea.
In his second stint as head coach, the Ghanaian Addo had been in charge since March 2024, replacing former coach Chris Hughton of the Republic of Ireland. Under Addo, Ghana qualified for the FIFA World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada — which begins in 70 days — finishing unbeaten atop Group I with 25 points.
Nevertheless, his overall record with the team was poor, with 34 games in charge and only 12 won, resulting in a 35% win ratio.
It was not made clear at the time of publication who his replacement would be, with the GFA advising they would “communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course”.
Ghana are grouped with England, Croatia, and Panama at the World Cup in North America.
Meanwhile, the DRC could be confirmed as the 10th African country at the World Cup in the early hours of Wednesday morning, should they beat Jamaica in their World Cup qualifiers (kick-off 11pm on Tuesday). If they manage to beat the island nation, the Leopards will play in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
