Book lovers, poetry enthusiasts, and art supporters are in for a cultural treat this Heritage Weekend as the Glenwood Book Fair takes place across Durban from September 24 to 27, 2026.
Organised by MYGLENWOOD and the Durban Book Club, the not-for-profit community festival aims to drive a vibrant culture of reading and writing while celebrating Durban’s prestige as a UNESCO City of Literature. With a focus on promoting indigenous language publishing, fostering local creative talent, and supporting youth literacy, every single session across the four days will be completely FREE to the public.
The festival will span four iconic venues throughout the suburb, hosting nearly 60 authors, poets, historians, and artists alongside storytelling sessions, live performances, and community discussions.
Venue: Umbilo Library at Bulwer Park, 10am
The fair kicks off on Heritage Day with a youth-focused program organized in partnership with the Umbilo Library and the Glenwood Urban Improvement Precinct. Highlights include:
Story Hour featuring Deborah Ewing, Sam Moodley, and Mpume Ngcobo.
Panel: “The Children’s Voice” facilitated by Kirsten Miller, with Dr Devi Rajab, Michelle Mathysen, Shristi Ashmaya, and others.
Storytelling through Dance performed by Vusi Makhanya and the KwaMashu Dance Theatre Company.
Community Initiatives: Launches for Friends of the Library and the We Love Reading program (where attendees are encouraged to donate children’s books).
An Open Mic session hosted by Kemera Moodley for attendees to sing, recite poetry, or share stories.
Morning Venue: Mazisi Kunene Museum (8 Delville Ave, Glenwood)
Focus: Celebrating South Africa’s first poet laureate, Mazisi Kunene, and promoting indigenous languages.
Features the panel “The isiZulu Voice” with Dr Nakanjani Sibiya, Ayanda Mchunu, Ntombenhle Dlamini, and Sindiswa Zulu. Prof Nompumelelo Zondi will discuss Kunene’s legacy, followed by a performance by Lamakhosi Kunene.
Afternoon Venue: KZNSA Gallery (166 Bulwer Rd, Glenwood)
Focus: Exploring the intersection of visual art and narrative in “The Artist’s Voice” with Nanda Soobben, Franco Frescura, Luke Molver, and Dayakar Padayachee.
A panel titled “The Durban Voice” featuring bestselling local authors Sven Axelrad, Shubnum Khan, ZP Dala, and Nathi Olifant.
The day wraps up with an optional exclusive dinner event, “Know Where Dinner”.
Main Venue: Phansi Museum (500 Esther Roberts Rd, Glenwood)
Vintage & Craft Market: Hosted on both days from 9am to 4pm by Fair Trade Events.
Street Lit Program: Highlighting vendors and literacy efforts by Illa Thompson.
Featured Panels: Discussions on identity, history, and current affairs including “Being South African” (featuring Dudu Busani-Dube, Dr Devi Rajab, Kirsten Miller, and Elana Bregin), “Uncomfortable Truths” with Prof Ashwin Desai, and “A Sense of Place” facilitated by Dr Michael Sutcliffe.
Spotlight Writers & Books: Sessions with authors Sue Nyathi, preview for the Mikula Book Auction, and the launch of Sinikithemba.
Special Events: A parallel Silent Book Club experience hosted by Silent Book Club Durban North at Poké Box near Phansi Museum, followed by a showcase of Durban’s book clubs.
Dinner at Poké Box: A curated multi-course dinner featuring wine pairings by Matt Draper on Saturday evening (6:30pm, R590 per person).
