The South African entertainment industry and fans are mourning following the loss of veteran actor, storyteller and barrier-breaker Seputla Daniel Sebogodi.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria on Thursday, July 23, to pay their respects during a memorial to an icon whose career helped define the landscape of local television and theatre.

Sebogodi, who passed away on Wednesday, July 15, left behind a vast and revered body of work.

Renowned for his unforgettable depiction of the formidable Kenneth Mashaba on “Generations”, his iconic roles extended across beloved productions like “Suburban Bliss”, “Bophelo ke Semphego”, “Redemption” and, most recently, “Scandal!”

His celebrated theatre portfolio also featured acclaimed performances in productions such as “Big Dada”, “Waiting for Godot”, “The Rivonia Trial”, “Once a Pirate” and “Mooi Street Moves”, among numerous others.

A homebuilt legacy at the State Theatre

For those gathered, hosting the memorial at the South African State Theatre held profound emotional significance.

Addressing the audience, Lenore Goss-Matjie, chairperson of the South African State Theatre, reflected on Sebogodi’s decades-long relationship with the theatre.

“Today we gather not only to say goodbye to a legendary actor, an icon, but to honour a remarkable human being whose life became woven into the story of South African theatre.

“Seputla Daniel Sebogodi did not simply perform on our stages; he gave life to them. He did not merely entertain audiences; he helped us understand ourselves.

“Through every character he portrayed, every story he told and every young artist he encouraged, he reminded us that the arts are not simply about performance; they are about humanity, truth and healing. They are about preserving who we are.”

“Today the South African State Theatre mourns one of its own. His relationship with the State Theatre was built through decades of artistic excellence, collaboration and friendship …

“To the Sebogodi family, thank you for sharing Seputla with South Africa and with the world at large. We know that today is your loss and it is deeply personal, but please also know that we share the loss with you.”

‘He believed in me more than I did’: Katlego Danke pays tribute

In a moving tribute, actress Katlego Danke took to the podium to honour the man who was both her co-star and fiercely protective “brother”.

Remembering their time together on the set of “Generations”, where they played Kenneth and Katlego Dankeaba, Danke shared how poetic it was to say goodbye on the very stage where they had both celebrated early career milestones.

“Walking in here today brings back a weird, beautiful memory,” Danke recalled, reflecting on the night they both took home awards at the State Theatre.

“That night we were nervous, excited, happy to be amongst our industry colleagues … That night we both took home awards, the first for both of us at this venue on this very stage.

“To be reminded of that, to say goodbye to him on the very same stage that we had a first together. There were lots of firsts with Seputla.”

“It was a first having a brother who was a colleague. He used to protect me fiercely. He did so in my presence and even in my absence. There were people who said, ‘Hey, we can’t even speak badly about you; Seputla shuts it down’.

“It was the first time working with someone I grew up watching on TV; there he was, this living legend. I’ve never worked with somebody who believed in my talent even more than I did. He believed in my career; he believed in what I could do.

“I appreciated that so much because nobody believed in me like the way Seputla Sebogodi did.”

Lightening the heavy atmosphere, she shared a fond memory of Sebogodi’s subtle appreciation for the finer things in life.

She recalled a scene where their characters had to eat crème brûlée.

“First time being on set with somebody who had a love for finer things that was quite hidden. I remember the one time being on set and Kenneth and Dineo had to have crème brûlée, and he was like, ‘What is this thing, how do you eat it’.

“He made me take him afterwards to Melrose Arch to eat crème brûlée. Little did I know that all these little moments would lead to today. Sad, but beautiful.

“Our last conversation was me asking him to do a project for me, and he said, ‘Of course’. I said, ‘I haven’t even asked you, you don’t know what I want’. He said, ‘Anything for you, anything’.

“You will be missed. You will be sorely missed,” said Danke.

Breaking barriers and inspiring generations

Beyond his iconic television roles, speaker after speaker highlighted Sebogodi’s pioneering role as a trailblazer for black performers in South Africa.

Actor, writer and director Josias “Dos” Moleele serenaded mourners before reflecting on meeting “Denzel” Sebogodi during his youth in Atteridgeville.

“There was a time when black people could not be on stage here, so he broke those barriers,” Moleele shared, describing how Sebogodi inspired him to pursue a career in the arts and later mentored him through industrial theatre productions.

“I looked up to him and knew I would follow in that line … What an honour it was to share a stage with a man I idolised.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Tebogo Makwela remembered Sebogodi as an extraordinary performer, storyteller and preacher.

“We mourn the passing of an iconic performer … He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy defined by artistic brilliance, educational resilience, deep family devotion and unyielding faith in God,” Makwela shared.

Funeral

Born in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, with family roots in Ga-Mothapo, east of Polokwane, Sebogodi’s journey will come full circle this weekend.

His funeral service will be held at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane on Saturday, July 25, where family, friends and fans will gather one last time to celebrate the life of a true South African legend.
