How Glody Lilepo could drive Kaizer Chiefs’ success next season

There’s no hiding from the fact that it’s been another poor season for Kaizer Chiefs, and this is despite their first piece of silverware in a decade.

That silverware was the Nedbank Cup, when they defeated Orlando Pirates at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium, in Durban, earlier this month.

Their results in the league, however, once again make for sorry reading. Last season Chiefs ended 10th in the table, and this season in the Betway Premiership they are ninth heading into their final game.

If they do indeed manage to finish inside the top eight, it would be a massive achievement considering their struggles once again.

Glody Lilepo: Chiefs’ Rising Star and Key to Future Success

Since Nasreddine Nabi took charge at the beginning of the season, he has called for patience as he aims to improve the team in the long term. The fans of the club and to an extent the management, though, are not a patient bunch.

Looking at the stats in the Betway Premiership this season, is also not an enjoyable task for Chiefs.

In 27 matches, they have scored 25 goals and conceded 32. For comparison, Mamelodi Sundowns scored 65 times in their 27 fixtures and conceded just 13.

The most interesting thing about Chiefs’ 25 goals is perhaps that winger Glody Lilepo has bagged five of those strikes. Having only joined the club in January, the 27-year-old has played just 14 matches for Chiefs. Yet, he is the top scorer for the club in the league. That’s an average of 0.36 goals per game.

While Lucas Ribeiro tops the scoring charts with 16 goals from 26 games, with his Sundowns teammates Iqraam Rayners (14) and Arthur Sales (8) completing the top three, it’s quite revealing looking at the goal average of the top trio. Only those three players have a better goal average than Lilepo, and that’s revealing considering the gulf between the two teams.
