“There’s a community of people out there who deserve to hear these messages.”
These powerful words from South African artist Sjava reveal his motivation for making his music inclusive and incorporating sign language interpreters at his performances.
In an interview with veteran broadcaster David Mashabela in 2022, the ‘Ekseni’ hitmaker opened up about his past relationship with a woman who was deaf and how it profoundly influenced his life and music.
The resurfacing of an old interview clip, which trended on X, recently piqued the interest of fans, who were captivated by the details revealed about the otherwise guarded celebrity’s love life.
In the video, Sjava shared the lessons and complexities of being in a relationship with a person living with a disability.
“She had a sound system and all the CDs. She would play music, and then, from the vibration, she would catch on the beat. They watch, but they can’t hear what you’re saying. I always had to explain what was being said,” he stated.
He further revealed that his ex-partner bought a notebook and would write things down as they spoke, as part of their efforts to avoid confusion during communication.
“She’d write, and I’d also write back,” he recalled.
In this process, she also taught him a bit of sign language.
“I got to learn some things, but that’s when I realised the importance; that there is a community out there that really deserves to hear these stories, that deserves to hear these messages. Then I spoke to Sis Fortune about an idea that I have. She came through. Sometimes when I perform, she comes and translates,” he explained.
Sjava’s interview struck a chord with fans, who expressed admiration for his initiative in educating himself about the daily realities of the deaf community.
