JUST IN: Deadly taxi violence claims four lives at Johannesburg’s Jeppe Taxi Rank

Four people have been shot dead in a suspected taxi violence-related incident at the Jeppe taxi rank in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, on Thursday morning. 

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a group of armed men came to a taxi rank in Jeppe policing precinct and started shooting randomly. 

She said four people were declared dead on the scene while three were taken to hospital with injuries. 

“One of the injured is a university student who was waiting for a bus,” she said.

Nevhuhulwi said the shooting is suspected to be related to taxi violence, and the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit is probing the incident.

In a separate shooting on Wednesday, three people were shot and killed at the Onkizizwe taxi rank.

Nevhuhulwi said police reports suggest that unknown suspects driving a white BMW randomly shot at bystanders at the rank. 

“The deceased were identified as taxi drivers,” she said.

“Two passengers were injured and taken to hospital.”

She confirmed that suspects have been arrested, and police are investigating a case of murder with three counts and attempted murder with two counts.

In January 2025, IOL News reported that a mass shooting at the Nyanga taxi rank in Cape Town resulted in one death and several others injured. 

The quick response by police has resulted in 19 security guards being taken into custody for questioning. 

Police also confiscated 13 rifles and seven handguns which it believes averted more shooting in the area.
