Kaizer Chiefs maintained their unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season with a 3-2 victory over Siwelele FC at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.
The result means Chiefs have now won three and drawn two of their opening five matches, keeping them firmly among the early pace-setters.
Having threatened in flashes during the opening stages, Chiefs eventually found the breakthrough in the 30th minute through Mfundo Vilakazi.
Siwelele’s high defensive line was exposed by a perfectly weighted pass over the top from Lebohang Maboe, with Vilakazi racing onto the ball before calmly dinking it over the onrushing goalkeeper from distance.
It was Vilakazi’s first goal of the season.
Chiefs had to wait until the 65th minute to double their advantage, but Wandile Duba’s finish was worth the wait.
The 22-year-old showed excellent instinct to meet a Mduduzi Shabalala cross with a backheel that wrong-footed both the goalkeeper and defenders, giving Chiefs some breathing room and taking his tally to three goals for the campaign.
Siwelele responded three minutes later when Aphiwe Baliti reduced the deficit with a deflected effort that beat Brandon Petersen.
The visitors’ two-goal cushion was restored in the 77th minute, although Chiefs needed a slice of fortune to do so.
Faiz Abrahams, who had come off the bench, struck the upright with a free-kick before the ball rebounded onto the head of goalkeeper Xulu and into the net for an own goal.
Michel N’guessan found another for the visitors in stoppage time but couldn’t deny Amakhosi the three points.
Chiefs saw out the remainder of the match to claim another three points and preserve their unbeaten record.
Amakhosi will face Polokwane City next Saturday, while Siwelele have a midweek date with Mamelodi Sundowns.
