South African author, entrepreneur and mental health advocate Kalene Oliver is celebrating a major milestone following the official launch of her book, “She’s a Hot Mess”.
The launch took place at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, Cape Town, on June 13, bringing together readers, supporters and friends for an event that marked the beginning of a new chapter in Oliver’s journey.
Taking to Instagram after the event, Oliver shared her excitement and gratitude with followers.
“That’s a wrap! Yesterday was everything I hoped it would be and more. ‘She’s a Hot Mess’ officially launched into the world, and I’m still trying to find the words for how grateful I feel.”
She thanked everyone who attended the event, purchased a copy of the book and supported her along the way.
“Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate, bought a book, shared in the journey.”
Oliver also gave special recognition to those who helped bring the event to life, describing the launch as a moment she will never forget.
The author revealed that the book began as a collection of personal experiences that shaped her life over the years.
“This book began as a collection of messy moments, unanswered questions, labels, struggles and lessons. Yesterday, those stories found their people.”
Reflecting on the significance of the launch, Oliver said the event represented far more than simply releasing a book.
“The launch was a celebration of resilience, growth and authenticity. It was a reminder that even the most unexpected chapters of our lives can lead to something meaningful.”
At the heart of “She’s a Hot Mess” is Oliver’s personal journey with ADHD, identity, mental health and the realities of navigating life with a neurodivergent mind.
Through honest storytelling, humour and self-reflection, she encourages readers to embrace their imperfections rather than be defined by them.
Writing the book was not always easy.
“Writing this book was both therapeutic and challenging. It meant revisiting experiences that shaped me, confronting setbacks and ultimately finding the courage to share my story with others.”
For Oliver, seeing readers finally connect with her work made every difficult moment worthwhile.
“Seeing the book finally in readers’ hands was a surreal and emotional experience.”
One of the standout moments from the launch came from conversations with attendees who saw their own experiences reflected in the pages of the book.
“What made the launch truly special was the opportunity to connect with people who saw parts of their own stories reflected in mine.”
She added that those interactions reminded her why she chose to tell her story in the first place.
