Katlego Mphela has tipped Kaizer Chiefs to edge the Soweto Derby, pointing to the influence of Brandon Petersen as a key factor heading into Sunday’s clash against Orlando Pirates.
With the Betway Premiership title race tightening after Mamelodi Sundowns dropped points against Stellenbosch, Pirates have a chance to open a gap at the summit.
But Mphela believes Chiefs have found a level of balance that makes them dangerous opponents in this fixture.
“We’ve seen from the past games they have played. When he is there, he gives the team confidence. They don’t concede a lot when he is there. They attack with freedom. There is a debate whether he should be in the World Cup squad or not.
“Since he came back, the team has been stabilised. He is a good goalkeeper and can play with his feet. He’s got height, so I think it’s a big boost for Kaizer Chiefs going into this game,” Mphela said.
Petersen’s return has coincided with Chiefs’ improved run of form, with the side rediscovering both defensive assurance and attacking rhythm.
That balance could be crucial in a derby that often hinges on fine margins rather than sustained dominance.
His presence has also allowed the backline to play with greater composure in build-up, relieving pressure and enabling smoother progression through the thirds.

“I think both teams are on form. They have won the past few games, but like we always say form does not matter when you go into the derby. It’s all about the passion and fight on the day.”
Despite Pirates’ recent dominance in the fixture and their position at the top of the table, Mphela leaned toward Chiefs — albeit with a clear admission of bias shaped by his former allegiances.
“I’ll be a bit biased here because the other team (Mamelodi Sundowns) has to win the league, so I’ll go for Chiefs to win 2-1.”

For Pirates, the derby presents a chance to strengthen their title push. For Chiefs, it is an opportunity to disrupt the race while reinforcing their own resurgence.
