Leader of the opposition in the Western Cape Provincial Legislature, Muhammad Khalid Sayed, joined influential leaders, business figures and peace advocates at the prestigious Global Justice, Love and Peace, Billionaires for Peace Summit on Thursday.
His presence placed Cape Town on the global conversation around unity, leadership and social change.
At the summit, held in Mumbai, India, Dr Varun Suthra and Sayed discussed potential collaborations between the globally renowned Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), and similar institutions in South Africa. The discussions centred around strengthening academic exchange, skill development, and inclusive education initiatives.
He elaborated that the primary purpose of the summit was to formulate strategies for promoting global peace across various platforms.
“I delivered an address in a colloquium on justice and peace. I drew on South African experience, our experience of reconciliation, and of triumph over apartheid. But also the fact that our constitution and struggle was very much anchored on justice as a means to attain peace,’’ Sayed said.

Sayed participated in the panel discussion alongside the former president of Mauritius and the former prime minister of Guinea-Bissau. Sayed said: “They were very appreciative of our Truth and Reconciliation process and the concept of UBUNTU.”
He met with various stakeholders, including government representatives from Maharaj’s organisation (which has a partnership with the Western Cape), politicians, academics, religious leaders, and philanthropists.
These individuals and groups are actively working on the African continent, and the aim is to engage them in the Western Cape to assist vulnerable communities.
Sayed also received an international award, as an “I Am Peacemaker Champion Peace and Justice”, awarded by Four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. “An award for my work in driving peace and justice, especially in the Western Cape,” he shared.
He emphasised that their success is not solely due to his individual efforts, but is the result of the collective work of the African National Congress (ANC) caucus in the Western Cape.
This unified effort, he stated, demonstrates their commitment to achieving an equal province, advocating for the vulnerable, and tackling criminality.
The initiative also ensures their voices are heard and acknowledged internationally.
He expressed hope that this effort would foster and establish impactful partnerships both within India and globally, ultimately improving the lives of people in the Western Cape.
