SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Lt-Gen. Dumisani Khumalo told the Madlanga Commission that he and the KZN Commissioner, Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi were dismissed from their acting position for attempting to end lawlessness within the SAPS.

Mkhwanazi acted as the national commissioner in 2012.

Testifying before the commission on Monday, Khumalo scrapped a notion that Mkhwanazi left the office voluntarily.

“All the acting heads that I have cited then happened to be moved away prior to the finalisation of that project of trying to turn the environment around (corruption),” he said.

Asked by Commission head, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga on whether Mkhwanazi left the position willingly or not, Khumalo said he decided to move, “but not out of free will.”

His testimony, however, is underscored by unresolved legal challenges, including his arrest in June on allegations of fraud and corruption—charges that continue to cast a shadow over his leadership.

In earlier testimony, Mkhwanazi stated that following his dismissal, he reverted to serving in a standard capacity as “just a police official.”

Khumalo delivered a detailed and candid account of his 34-year tenure in law enforcement, highlighting the persistent institutional and political pressures confronting the Crime Intelligence Division.

Khumalo currently holds the position of Divisional Commissioner for Crime Intelligence and serves as the project leader of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Khumalo is expected to continue his testimony on Tuesday.
