Kylie Jenner’s Meta Glasses spark privacy uproar

“But she said she doesn’t leave her house due to anxiety about the paparazzi taking pictures of her.”

That is what everyone is saying on the internet after Kylie Jenner and Meta AI announced their glasses collaboration.

Some fans are calling out what they see as a contradiction in Jenner’s latest campaign.

Jenner’s struggle with privacy

In May, Jenner appeared on Jake Shane’s “Therapuss” podcast and she candidly shared that she avoids leaving her house because of past traumatic experiences and the paparazzi.

“But when I’m in LA, for some reason when I’m here, it’s hard for me to leave the house. I think that’s because honestly paparazzi or in LA it’s just easier to be spotted,” she said.

When Shane asked if the paparazzi waits for her to leave her house, she said she doesn’t really leave.

The controversial glasses collaboration

Critics are highlighting the contradiction between the reality star’s recent statements on privacy and her endorsement of new smart glasses capable that will most likely violate people’s privacy.

We live in a world full of creeps and the reason why people are not really in favour of this campaign is because the main concern is people’s privacy.

Sure, the concept of having “smart glasses that let you capture photos and video, listen to music, take calls and access Meta AI – all hands-free – is cool but it is scary at the same time.

Imagine you are minding your own business then someone is recording you and you’re not aware of that? Very scary.

Public reaction to the campaign

Influencer @blueeyedkaylajade shared a TikTok video saying that Jenner’s campaign will cause more harm, specifically to women.

She added that Meta is simply trying to normalise the glasses and make them more socially acceptable.

Social media users agreed with @blueeyedkaylajade and did not hold back their thoughts and opinions on Jenner’s campaign with Meta AI.

@misssylvies commented: “And why would Kylie endorse this when she herself claims she hates being recorded all the time without her consent?”

@tiktokuser227690 shared: “I was pregnant and got a cervical check and my doctor was wearing them. I was too scared to say anything.”

Meta AI’s safety guidelines for users

So, on their website Meta AI shared privacy guidelines about how consumers can use the glasses to ensure that people’s privacy is protected.

Respect people’s preferences

According to Meta, you must stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather opt out.

Turn of the glasses in private spaces

They added that the consumer must turn off your glasses in sensitive spaces like the doctor’s office, locker room, public bathroom, school or place of worship. 

The capture LED light must shine

When recording, Meta says you must show people the capture LED so they know when you’re recording. And if the capture LED is covered, you’ll be notified to clear it before taking a photo or video or going live. 

Glasses are not for hazardous activities

Don’t use your glasses to engage in harmful activities like harassment, infringing on privacy rights, or capturing sensitive information like pin codes.

Are the guidelines enough? 

The guidelines are here but are they enough to ensure people’s safety?

People break the law all the time and these safety guidelines are simply not enough if we are being honest.

Some people will most likely not even bother telling other people that they are using the glasses meaning that still, this goes back to the safety issue.

Meta definitely needs to come up with another way in which people will be made aware that someone is using the glasses and they are being recorded.
