The legal team for Mzamo Patrick Mlaba, the alleged mastermind in the murder of former KZN MPL Zibuse Mlaba, failed to appear at the Camperdown Regional Court on Monday.

Mzamo, Zibuse’s cousin, allegedly paid R130,000 for the hit.

“I don’t know where my lawyer is,” the 63-year-old Mlaba informed the court, adding that he last spoke to his legal counsel when he was denied bail by the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court in December 2025.

Mlaba faces charges of murder, defeating the administration of justice, and conspiring to kill his cousin, who was an ANC deputy chairperson in KZN and a regent chief in the KwaXimba area, outside of Cato Ridge.

His legal team consists of advocate Sibusiso Xulu and instructing attorney Sibusiso Mkhize.

Mlaba vehemently declined the court’s offer of Legal Aid South Africa services. “If I can’t get hold of my lawyer, I will hire another lawyer,” he stated, promising to secure a new lawyer by early March so that the proceedings to indict him in the High Court could advance.

Meanwhile, State prosecutor Zokwakhe Nzama said the indictment was not yet finalised and requested a week to complete it. The State is expected to serve Mlaba with the indictment in early March.

ANC veteran Zibuse Mlaba was gunned down in October 2021.

Magistrate Smanga Mlotshwa previously denied Mlaba bail, finding that he failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances for his release. The court also noted that the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court had previously denied him bail in connection with the murder of hitman Mncedisi Gwala, whom Mlaba allegedly hired to kill Zibuse

Zibuse was shot dead on October 21, 2021, outside his office at Wareing’s Shopping Centre in Cato Ridge.

The magistrate concluded that the State had established a prima facie case against Mlaba. Furthermore, Mlaba’s accomplices, Fortune Dlamini and Nhlanhla Hlongwa, have pleaded guilty and are now Section 204 witnesses.
